Why basic HTML/CSS classes?

For the last several years, GeekAustin has offered classes in PHP, SQL, MySQL, basic Unix skills and other topics. During this period, we've had numerous requests to add a basic HTML/CSS class to our curriculum. Some of these requests came from people who registered for the GeekAustin PHP, MySQL, or other classes, and discovered that they needed to first brush up on web design basics. We also heard from those who simply want to be able to make minor edits to their website yet didn't want to pay several hundred dollars for a class at the local community college.

Why teach HTML and CSS as separate classes?

Our original HTML/CSS class outline consisted of six classes. Rather than offer them as a single unit. we made a decision to split the HTML and CSS into separate classes. There were a few reasons for this. Some potential attendees are familiar with basic HTML and only seek help with CSS. There was no reason to require them to pay for and sit through material that they already know. By dividing into two classes, we give those new to HTML the opportunity to get their feet wet before deciding to commit to a longer class.

The CSS class will take place in the month following the HTML class. You can sign up for either class or both. You can register for the basic CSS class here.

Basic HTML Class Dates

The basic HTML class consists of three two hour sessions, and will meet on the following dates:

Monday, April 18 7PM-9PM
Monday, April 25 7PM-9PM
Monday, May 2 7PM-9PM

The Instructor

We are happy to announce that the HTML/CSS classes will be taught by Pat Ramsey. In addition to being an expert in web standards, Pat is manager of the Austin WordPress Meetup, a core member of Refresh Austin, and co-founder of Cospace. Pat also serves as an Advisory Board Member and trainer for Knowbility.
